The Elan Valley is a river valley located in the western part of Rhayader, in Powys, Wales. It is sometimes called the 'Welsh Lake District'. It extends 70 square miles or 180 km2 of the countryside and lake. Elan Valley contains the Elan Village and the Elan Valley Reservoirs. The Elan Valley Reservoirs are a series of man-made reservoirs and lakes that were created to utilise the water coming from the rivers Claerwen and Elan. There are five reservoirs that are found in the Elan Valley, and they include: Craig Goch, Pen-y-Garreg, Caban Coch, Garreg Ddu, and Claerwen. All anglers twelve years old and up require an Environment Agency rod licence, which it is only available from Elan Valley Post Offices. Anglers will not be issued with permits unless they present an official rod licence.

he species of fish that can be found in this venue include brown trout and some salmon. As of 2009, the fishing season extends from 20 March until 17 October 2009. It is strictly mandated that the venue is only for fly fishing. There are two available types of permits used only for fly fishing, and these include Elan Trout Fisheries Permit and the Claerwen Wild Brown Trout Fishery Permit. With the Elan Trout Fisheries Permit, anglers can catch fish for £8.50 per day upon the 25 km shoreline of the Elan Valley Reservoir, except for conservation areas of Penbont Bridge to Pen y Garreg Dam. The Claerwen Wild Brown Trout Fishery Permit covers fishing from the 20 km shoreline of the Claerwen Reservoir, at a cost of £6.00 per day and £4.00 concessions.
